18. Ice House

INSIDE
Once held ice from lakes around the region. 
BUILDING’S ORIGIN
Moved from its original location in Bishop on Short Street behind the house of Gus Cashbaugh, a local pioneer.  

HISTORY
Before electricity and refrigeration, people bought blocks of ice cut from the waters of Lake Sabrina up Bishop Creek west of Bishop.  Ice was stored in this building throughout the summer months and distributed to homes with “Ice Boxes”, the forerunner to the refrigerator. The ice in this building held up surprisingly well as it was surrounded by straw and canvas.
